“Well, I’m glad you solved that mystery,” Mom said at dinner. She passed the bucket of chicken. My favorite — extra crispy. “So Mr. Fleshman works in horror movies.”

“I knew that,” Billie chimed in. She had mashed potato gravy all over her chin. “I knew all those scary things were special effects.”

“You did not!” I snapped.

“Did too!”

“Did not! No way!”

“Could we have a quiet dinner for once?” Dad sighed. He told Billie to wipe her chin. Then he lowered a forkful of mashed potatoes and turned to me. “So the mystery is solved? No more wild stories?”

“No more wild stories,” I promised.

“Jack can’t help it,” Billie sneered. “He has to tell wild stories.”

“Do not!” I cried. “It’s just that — ”

“Ask him why everyone calls him Saucerman,” Billie said to Mom and Dad. “Go ahead. Ask him.”

“Shut up, Billie,” I whispered.

“Why do they call you Saucerman?” Mom asked.

I shrugged. “Beats me.”
